Goodbye Period Pain: How Abdominal Massage Provides Natural Relief

For many women, the arrival of a monthly period doesn't just mean reaching for a heating pad—it means missing work, skipping social plans, and enduring debilitating cramps. If you suffer from primary dysmenorrhea (the medical term for painful periods), you’ve likely been told that medication is your only option.
At the Prenatal Massage & Movement Center, we believe in a sustainable approach to dysmenorrhea . By combining science-based solutions with the ancient wisdom of the Arvigo® Technique, we can help provide lasting, natural relief from menstrual distress.
Can Massage Really Stop Cramps?
A landmark study published in Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine followed nursing students suffering from severe menstrual pain. The results are revolutionary.
Significant Pain Reduction
Participants who received a 10-minute abdominal massage daily for seven days prior to their period reported significantly lower pain levels on a visual scale.
Shorter Duration
The massage intervention significantly reduced the total hours of pain experienced during the first three days of the cycle.
Reduced Heavy Bleeding
Participants saw a decrease in excessive menstrual bleeding, helping cycles return to a more manageable flow.
How Abdominal Massage Works
Menstrual cramps are largely caused by an excess of prostaglandins, which cause uterine blood vessels to constrict and the muscle to contract.
Our specialized massage techniques work by:
Improving Pelvic Circulation: Increasing fresh, oxygenated blood flow to the reproductive organs.
Repositioning the Uterus: When the uterus is tilted or slightly out of alignment, it must work harder to shed its lining, causing more intense spasms.
Reducing Muscular Tension: Releasing "trigger points" in the abdominal wall that often tighten during times of stress.
The Arvigo® Technique is More Than Just a Massage
While general massage is helpful, the Arvigo® Technique of Maya Abdominal Therapy is a specialized modality. This external, non-invasive body manipulation repositions internal organs that may have shifted, restricting the flow of blood, lymph, and nerve impulses.
At the Prenatal Massage & Movement Center, we use this technique to address:
Painful periods and chronic pelvic pain.
Fertility Enhancement by helping the uterus stay well-positioned and resilient for conception.
Postpartum & C-Section Recovery by facilitating the return of the uterus to its optimal position after birth.
Digestion and hormonal imbalances.
A Self-Care Technique For Between Your Sessions
We empower our clients with tools they can use at home. Between your professional sessions, try this gentle abdominal stroke to support your flow:
Stroke up from your right hip to your bottom right ribs (ascending colon).
Stroke from the right ribs, across the upper abdomen, and down to the left hip (transverse to descending colon).
Connect the movements in a large arc from the right hip, across, and down to the left.

Frequently Asked Questions
-
Natural relief for period pain involves a holistic approach that focuses on the root causes of uterine tension rather than just masking the symptoms. High-impact methods include specialized abdominal massage, such as the Arvigo® Technique, which improves pelvic blood flow and ensures the uterus is properly aligned.
-
While long-term pelvic health is built over time, you can find faster relief by utilizing targeted self-care techniques that down-regulate the nervous system. Performing the self-massage technique consistently in between your Arvigo® Abdominal Massage sessions may help to manually move stagnant blood and reduce the intensity of contractions in the abdominal wall.
-
Yes, clinical research suggests that abdominal massage can be a powerful tool for managing flow intensity. Studies have shown that abdominal massage can help transition "excessive" bleeding to an "average" flow by supporting the prostanoid system and toning the uterine tissues. The Arvigo® Technique further supports this by ensuring the uterus is in its optimal position, which allows the body to shed the uterine lining more efficiently and effectively, preventing the uterus from having to over-contract to complete its monthly cycle.
-
While abdominal massage is a safe and gentle therapy for most, there are specific instances where it should be avoided to ensure your safety. Massage is not recommended during an active infection of the gastrointestinal or pelvic tracts, or immediately following abdominal surgery—typically, we advise waiting at least six to eight weeks for the tissue to heal and clearance from your medical provider.
Additionally, we avoid deep abdominal work during the first trimester of pregnancy (in which we rather recommend a prenatal massage) and in cases of known abdominal aneurysms. It is important to notify your massage therapist of any IUDs or uterus related concerns so that the pressure can be adjusted appropriately to ensure your comfort and safety.
-
For maximum therapeutic benefit, the best time to schedule a professional Arvigo® session and perform a selfcare abdominal massage is between the end of your menstrual flow and 5 days before your next period.
-
While we generally recommend waiting until your menstrual flow has finished to receive an Arvigo® abdominal massage session, very gentle and superficial work can still be beneficial. During your period, the focus shifts from deep structural alignment to soothing relaxation and lymphatic support. We typically advise clients to wait until their flow is light or has ended to receive a comprehensive session.
